Outdoor’s Growing Audience

More Canadians are commuting to work and have longer commutes. There are a number of factors contributing to the increased mobility trend including a larger workforce, an increase in the number of dual income households and the growing number of licensed drivers.

  • Urban Canadians spend an average of 65 minutes commuting to and from work. That’s the equivalent of 12 full days a year spent commuting based on a 260 day work year. *
  • 21% of urban Canadians say they are spending more time commuting than last year. *

  This is consistent with the Stats Can 2005 Survey which reported urban Canadians spend an average of 65 minutes commuting to and from work.    Stats Can reported that commute time has increased in urban markets from 54 minutes in 1992 to 65 minutes 2005, a 20% increase.

 

Distance Travelled to Work

         Commute an average of 67 km. to and from work in past 7 days.

         Males reported travelling greater distances ( 82 km.) compared to females (50 km.)

 

The typical urban Canadian drives nearly 130 km. over a 7 day period, with slightly over half traveling 75 km or more each week.  Urban Canadians travel the greatest distance commuting to and from work.

Commute Times Have Increased

 

On an average weekday, urban Canadians spend 65 minutes commuting to and

from work 21% of Canadians state they are spending more time commuting to and from work compared to last year.

Cars and Trucks Are The Dominant Mode of Transport To Get To Work

 

73% of workers travel by car or truck on a regular basis to commute to work. The incidence of traveling by car or truck to work increases among those residents living in the suburban areas of a city.
